Senior Product Designer (AI Enabled): Building Digital Climate Platforms

Are you a senior designer who builds, not just designs, and wants your work to actually matter?
Open Earth Foundation is a California-based nonprofit on a mission to create groundbreaking technology that helps combat the climate crisis.
Our climate platforms support cities around the world with data-driven climate planning and delivery. We’re a diverse, global team working remotely and collaborating with partners worldwide to make real change possible.
With strong funding and a powerhouse team of innovators, we’re ready to tackle big challenges for a resilient Earth for generations to come and we need the planet’s brightest minds to help solve them!
We're growing our design team and looking for Senior AI Enabled Product Designers: generalists and makers who use AI to go from idea to working prototype fast, own problems end to end, and ship alongside engineers, data teams and product leads.
This is not a research role, and it's not a role for someone who only wants to design flows in isolation.
It is a role for someone who sees design as a way to make things real.
Priority will be given to applications submitted by November 15th.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
As a Senior Product Designer at Open Earth Foundation, you will:
• Lead the design of digital climate platforms used by real cities and institutions, including a new global digital service for cities built with international partners.
• Lead projects and epics as a designer, from problem framing to shipped solution, with autonomy under ambiguity.
• Use AI to build and validate fast: turn ideas into working prototypes, test them, and iterate before committing engineering time.
• Bring product thinking to every decision, balancing user needs, technical constraints, partner expectations and impact.
• Help shape the design system that keeps our products consistent, accessible and fast to build.
• You'll help turn complex climate, urban, and data-heavy challenges into tools people can actually use.
Responsibilities: • Lead the end-to-end design of features and products using Figma as the primary design tool.
• Build AI-assisted prototypes to explore ideas, test assumptions and align stakeholders quickly.
• Translate complex problems and datasets into clear, accessible interfaces and flows.
• Run lightweight validation (usability tests, quick interviews, analytics review with tools such as PostHog or GA4).
• Collaborate closely with developers to ensure feasibility and quality implementation.
• Contribute to and evolve our design system: components, patterns, documentation and design-to-code consistency.
• Have created or managed design systems or are eager to develop that expertise, including reusable components, design foundations, accessibility, and documentation.
• Communicate design rationale clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including external partners.
• Mentor and support other designers and collaborators when needed.
• Able to maintain and support in the product development cycle, both ongoing and from scratch (i.e.: helping to define a design system or UI kit together).
How We Work: • Remote-first , async-friendly, highly collaborative.
• This position is international.
• Schedule flexibility is expected, with willingness to collaborate during overlapping hours of 8am-11am PST.
• LATAM time zones or availability within ±3 hours of ART (GMT-3) are strongly preferred.
The Ideal Candidate:
We're intentionally looking for someone who: Is an AI-enabled designer • Already uses AI as part of how they work, not as an experiment.
• Has built functional prototypes, tools or MVPs with AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Figma MCP, or similar).
• Cares about responsible and ethical use of AI.
Is a versatile product designer. A generalist, not a specialist • Moves comfortably between strategy, UX, UI, prototyping and implementation support.
• Favours lightweight, pragmatic validation over lengthy research processes, learning by building and testing.
• Is comfortable wearing different hats when the team needs it.
Is a startup-minded maker • Has worked in startups, scale-ups or small, fast-moving teams, and thrives in constant change.
• Adapts methods to the problem instead of following a rigid "ideal" design process.
• Takes ownership, makes decisions and follows through to delivery.
Cares deeply about climate • Has experience in climate tech, clean energy, sustainability, civic tech or the public sector (highly valued), or a genuine personal commitment to climate.
• Is motivated to learn about climate science, global climate governance, and how cities operate.
• Wants their design work to contribute to real-world impact.
Bonus: experience with design systems • Have you built, rebuilt or owned a design system? We'd love to hear about it. We're investing in ours, and that experience is a real plus, but it's not a requirement.
Interpersonal Skills: • Clear, confident communicator in written and spoken English (required; non-native speakers very welcome).
• Strong collaborator across disciplines and time zones.
• Comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
• Proactive, curious, and accountable.
• Able to take ownership and contribute as a core team member in a remote environment.
Qualifications: • 5+ years of experience as a Product Designer, UX Designer, or similar role, with a track record of owning and shipping digital products.
• A portfolio showing problem-solving, ownership and shipped outcomes, not just polished screens, including at least one example of something built or prototyped with AI.
• Experience in startups, climate tech, sustainability, civic tech, or open-source projects is a strong plus.
• Experience creating or owning a design system (tokens, Figma variables, component libraries mapped to code, accessibility) is a strong plus.
• Experience with data-heavy products, B2B/B2G SaaS or data visualization is a plus.
• Familiarity with HTML/CSS or frontend concepts, for collaborating with developers.
• Spanish or Portuguese is a plus.
Compensation & Benefits: • Full-time position.
• Salary range: USD $40,000 – $50,000 per year , depending on experience and location. Paid in USD.
• Professional development budget.
• Unlimited PTO, paid holidays, and paid sick leave.
• Fully remote, international work environment.
• Annual in-person team retreat.
